Monday October 30, 2006

-Its Monday and on our list of things to do today is:

-We will start with Wordskills unit seven. We use the Wordskills book to help with grammar, sentence structure, and vocabulary.
-Next we will revise essays that we wrote about 2 weeks ago. We will need to correct them by using grammitical conventions, correct vocabulary and proper sentence structure.
-Then for homework students will receive an FCAT writing book in which they need to complete all examples (about 22 questions) for Tuesday.

Today in class, we have to take a reading test on the book Lord of The Flies. But otherwise this should be a great day in class. We've just got finished watching the morning news,it wasn't that interesting,but it was ok. In class today the questions on the test are

1.Explain why you think the boys chose Ralph as their leader.
2.What does the conch symbolize in the story? Explain why
3.What effect does their time in the bathing pool have on Ralph and Jack?
4.When Rodger throws rocks at Henry, why doesn't he aim to hit?
5.What conclusion does Ralph come to about being chief? What about his own ability?
6.Ralph tells the group they should die before they let the fire go out. What does he mean by that comment?
7.Why do the twins assume that the dead parachutist is the beast?
8.What does Jack say about the new place he and Ralph have just explored would be a good place for? How does he suggest it could be defended?
9.With Jack in charge of the hunt, what does Ralph daydream about?
10.Describe the source of the conflict between Ralph and Jack?

Today students were given the opportunity to post to the interantional class through Nicenet. Students also read Lord of the Flies chapter 8 and began locating information for their research project which is due December 4, 2006.

Today in English 2 we had our wordskills books handed back to the class and then we had to take a FACT writing prompt and then blogged and worked on nicenet.org.
FCAT Writing Situation
Students and school staff complain about the lunchroom. It is often too noisy and over-crowded and frequently, the lines are long.
Directions For Writing
Think about your school lunchroom and what you dislike. Write to explain what changes you would make to your lunchroom.

Today in class we are to catch up on our blogs and some of us assisted the new students with their blogs. We are currently reading Lord of the Flies. Students are to be up to chapter three in the book. We had a small conversation about the PSAT's.

1. Today we completed a timed essay using a persuasive prompt. The prompt is provided below:

Writing Situation
The principal at your school has instituted random locker and backpack/bookbag searches to check for guns, knives and other weapons. Anyone caught with these weapons will be immediately suspended.
Directions for Writing
What is your opinion on this issue? Do you think these searches will help students feel safer? Write a letter to your local newspaper stating your position and supporting it with convincing reasons.
2. When we completed the essay, we highlighted each topic sentence in the essay and drew a box around all transitional words or phrases.
3. Silent reading of the novel Lord of the Flies. We should be finished with chapter three by Thursday.
4. PSAT testing tomorrow during 1st and 2nd blocks.
5. Students who were absent Monday must complete Wordskills unit 5 on pages 52-61 and turn-in Thursday.

(b) who whould you trust the least to give you truthful information on the subject? (c) where would you look to find out more information about the subject?

Students gathered in the theater for a Pathways presentation. Students were given information about graduation requirements. The presentation took nearly the entire block.
